Count likely nights before joining
Open your expected travel calendar and mark routes where a host stay would replace a paid campground or other overnight option. Do not count aspirational trips that are unlikely to happen.

Start with the campground cost you would otherwise pay, then subtract any spending you realistically expect at the host location and any meaningful detour cost. This gives a more honest savings number.
Value can be experiential too
A winery, farm or museum stop may be chosen because it makes the trip better, not merely because it is cheaper. Separate financial value from experience value so the decision remains clear.
