Payload After Passengers: How Much Capacity Is Left?
The payload number on the door label is the starting budget. Every passenger, bag, hitch component and pound of trailer pin or tongue load spends part of that same budget.
Passengers are payload
Four adults can use several hundred pounds before any trailer load or camping cargo is added. Estimating only the driver materially overstates remaining capacity for many family setups.
Hitch and trailer load belong in the calculation
A weight-distribution hitch, fifth-wheel hitch, tongue weight or pin weight can be one of the largest payload items. Do not compare payload only with cargo in the cab and bed.
Aftermarket equipment counts too
Bed covers, racks, bumpers, toolboxes, auxiliary fuel tanks and other installed accessories add real weight. Some are already present when a payload sticker is issued and some are added later, so use actual scale weights when possible.
