RV Generator Oil Change Interval: Use Hours, Not Guesswork
RV generator maintenance should follow the engine manufacturer’s hour-based schedule, not a generic interval copied from another generator.
Model number comes first
Onan, Generac and portable-generator models can have different engines, oil capacities and service schedules. Find the exact model/spec label before buying filters or oil.
Hours matter more than calendar mileage
A generator engine can accumulate significant operating time while the RV itself moves very little. Track generator hours separately from vehicle miles.
Exercise requirements are separate from oil changes
Some built-in generator manufacturers recommend periodic exercise under load to maintain fuel-system and electrical condition. That schedule is distinct from the oil-service interval.
Document service history
Record date, run hours, oil type, filter part number and any observations. A clean service log makes it easier to spot rising oil consumption or shortened intervals over time.
