How Many Watts Can a 30 Amp RV Use?

A 30-amp RV shore-power service is commonly treated as roughly 3,600 watts at 120 volts, but actual voltage varies and running everything near the limit is not a good operating strategy.

The basic math is volts × amps

At a nominal 120 volts, 30 amps equals 3,600 watts. If voltage is lower, available wattage at the same current is lower as well. Campground voltage and individual circuit behavior can vary.

Large appliances add quickly

Air conditioners, electric water heaters, microwaves, space heaters, hair dryers and residential-style appliances can each draw a substantial share of the service. Running several together can trip the main or branch breaker.

Startup loads matter

Compressor and motor loads can briefly draw more power when starting. Soft-start equipment may reduce some startup demand but does not change the 30-amp service rating.

An EMS does not increase capacity

Electrical management systems protect against problematic power conditions, but they do not turn a 30-amp RV into a 50-amp RV. Load management remains necessary.
