30 Amp vs 50 Amp RV Surge Protector: Which Do You Need?
The right surge protector follows the electrical service your RV is wired for. Adapters may change what pedestal you can plug into, but they do not change your RV service.
Identify your RV service first
A typical 30-amp RV uses a three-prong shore-power plug, while a typical 50-amp RV uses a four-prong plug. The distinction matters because the electrical architecture and available power are different.
Adapters do not upgrade electrical capacity
A dogbone adapter can let a 30-amp RV connect to a 50-amp pedestal or let a 50-amp RV use a 30-amp source, but the adapter does not turn one RV electrical system into the other. Your protection device should still be selected around the coach.
Choose broader protection when the economics justify it
A basic surge device addresses transient spikes. A more complete electrical management system can also disconnect during sustained high or low voltage and wiring faults. That broader behavior can matter more than headline surge ratings.
