RV Solar Panels in Series vs Parallel

Series and parallel wiring can use the same panels yet behave very differently. The correct topology depends on controller voltage limits, cable length, shading and how much current you want to move through the roof wiring.

RVVerdicts take: Series wiring usually reduces current and voltage drop on long runs; parallel wiring can be more tolerant of panel-specific shading. Stay within the controller’s maximum input voltage and current under worst-case conditions.

Series adds voltage

With identical panels in series, voltage adds while current remains roughly that of one panel. Higher voltage can reduce wire losses and allow smaller conductors for the same power over a long run.

Parallel adds current

Parallel wiring keeps voltage near one panel’s operating voltage while current adds. That can increase conductor and fuse requirements, especially as array size grows.

Shading behavior differs

Partial shade can limit current through a series string depending on panel bypass-diode behavior. Parallel branches can sometimes isolate the impact better, but roof layout and panel electronics matter.

Cold-weather open-circuit voltage is a hard limit

Panel open-circuit voltage rises in cold conditions. A series array that looks safe at room temperature can exceed an MPPT controller’s maximum input voltage on a cold morning, so use the manufacturer’s temperature-adjusted design method.
