A system sitting unused for months deserves inspection and a manufacturer-recommended sanitizing process before drinking-water use resumes.
Source quality changes the risk
Municipal campground water, private wells and remote fills can have different treatment and sediment characteristics. Use a potable source and avoid filling from uncertain supplies simply because a hose connection is available.
Filters do not replace tank sanitation
A filter can improve specific water characteristics but does not clean biofilm or contamination inside tanks and plumbing. Treat filtration and system sanitation as separate functions.
Use the exact procedure and concentration
Tank volume, plumbing layout and sanitizing chemical determine the correct amount and contact time. Follow the RV manual or component manufacturer rather than copying an arbitrary recipe.
